 What is House Style?

-House style is the format that is used in magazines. It can also be thought of as the general look of the magazine.



· Reflect on the idea of each magazine having a House Style: 

The idea of each magazine having a House Style is a great way to organize your magazine. Also, it adds a professional & clean look to your brand.


· How do you think House Styles are developed?

I believe that House Styles are developed by a collaborative group of editors. Working in a group is a great way to see how different mindsets can come together to create something extraordinary.




· Why do you think House Styles are used?

House Styles are used to help organize a magazine whilst having a branded representation.


· How might House Styles be influenced by their genre of magazine?

House Styles can be influenced by their genre of magazine because for example, VOGUE would have an elegant or sophisticated appearance whether it's the font, photos or set up. Meanwhile a tattoo magazine might have a colorful & more hardcore appearance for its viewers.


· How might House Styles be influenced by their purpose? Audience?


The extremities of House Style depends on the audience. For instance, Kidz Bop will include a bright & colorful version to attract the younger audience.


· Has this idea of House Styles changed the way you look at magazines?

Though I already knew that running a magazine is work, I didn't realize how different the genres are. These people work hard to design what they believe their audiences would prefer.

This is for my AICE Media studies Cambridge AS level course.  Compulsory question 1 asks 'How does your product use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups or issue?' My magazine follows the basic conventional Rules and Guidelines of a standard magazine, amongst other things it includes a masthead, a tagline, a coverline, a cover image, a barcode, an issue number and date.
